Even as the Marine Drive police are busy gathering evidence to corroborate allegations of molestation and threats levelled by actor Preity Zinta against her former friend and industrialist Ness Wadia, sources close to both sides indicated that well wishers have been making hectic efforts to bring about a truce san legalities.
The well-wishers, sources said, include a top Bollywood actor and son of a construction tycoon who share excellent rapport with both since many years. However, both parties appear to be unrelenting so far.
Sources said that advisers from both the sides have already sent feelers to the police, indicating the possibility of such an eventuality. However, police officers remain tight-lipped. “That is none of our concern. Our officers are in the process of collecting strong evidence,” said a senior police officer.
Meanwhile, as the police are yet to come across any solid evidence so far to hold ground for the charges of molestation, thoughts are being applied on whether to go ahead with the impugned penal section as the investigation progresses.
A senior police official told HT that the decision to continue with or drop the molestation charge (Section 354) would be taken only after the investigating team was through with collecting evidence and recording the witness statement.
“So far, no one has given anything (statement) that could be construed as sexual molestation, though on technical grounds the charge has been added to the FIR. The charge may not stand during trial if it is not backed by evidence,” the official said.
Even Zinta’s lawyer had earlier said that she had accused Wadia of ‘outraging modesty’ and not ‘sexual molestation’.
