Amitabh Bachchan’s Bhoothnath was not a huge hit when it released, but over the years the film has gained tremendous popularity on the satellite and home video circuit and enjoys a lot of reruns over the weekends due to its fan following among kids.

Six years after the release of Bhoothnath, Amitabh Bachchan is back as the friendly ghost in Bhoothnath Returns. The film is a sequel in spirit but a completely new story and has a different setup. Bachchan’s character is the only common link. In this film the wannabe scary ghost is sent back to earth so that he can salvage his lost reputation.

While the previous Bhoothnath was about one family and shot pretty much inside a palatial bungalow, the sequel is set in a chaotic urban locality and features many more characters. Going by the trailer, Bhoothnath Returns looks like a political satire in which a ghost takes on a corrupt politician by fighting elections against him. While the kid in Bhoothnath was a naughty and pampered brat, this one features a fearless, street-kid. Boman Irani is cast as the antagonist who is challenged by Bachchan in Bhoothnath Returns.

Apart from Amitabh Bachchan, Bhoothnath also starred Shahrukh Khan and Juhi Chawla. And this tradition continues with Bhoothnath Returns as the film is expected to feature cameos by a galaxy of stars including Shahrukh Khan once again, Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor.

Bhoothnath Returns, directed by Nitesh Tiwari. The film is set to release on 11th April, 2014.
