Vir Das will be playing a Sikh character in 1984. The film will take a look at a Sikh couple trying to preserve their life, faith and dignity during the infamous anti-Sikh riots after Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984. The film will be directed by Shivaji Lotan Patil who won the National Award for Best Director last year for his Marathi film Dhag.
Says Vir, “It’s a serious dramatic role with tremendous scope for emotional expression. And I play a Sardar, hence the facial growth. I also gave to wear the turban. It isn’t difficult for me to get a hang of the way a Sardarji dresses, speaks and behaves because a lot of my friends in boarding school in Sanawar were Sikhs. So I grew up with a Sikh population.”
As part of preparing for the role, Vir is learning how to speak thet Punjabi. Even though he was given a choice of learning the accent and language on set during the shoot, the actor chose to spend some time with his assistant Gurmeet who is teaching him how to speak like a Sikh. A source reveals that Vir is often spotted sitting with Gurmeet and having long conversations in Punjabi.
Vir and Soha Ali Khan, who plays his wife, would be going through some months of rehearsals to get comfortable together as a couple. Vir has worked with Soha in Go Goa Gone. Soha and Vir get along well since then.
After getting massive success at the box office, Vikas Bahl’s Queen is all set to be remade in Chinese. The movie which hit theatres on March 7, 2014 starred Kangana Ranaut, Lisa Haydon and Rajkumar Rao in lead roles and grossed Rs. 60 crore domestically.
The film was premiered at Busan International Film Festival in October 2013, where many producers expressed their interest in remaking it. Last month, reports emerged that the comedy drama flick might be remade in Tamil and Telugu but the latest buzz states that Rani from Rajouri is also interested in speaking Chinese. Although Bahl would not be directing any of these, however he will be creatively involved with these films also.
“There’s a Rani in every corner of the world which is why this story found takers everywhere. For some strange reason, a lot of people at Busan fest asked us if it was a Korean film. That’s when it struck us that it’s a universal story. And so, when a couple of producers approached us, we gave the remakes a go-ahead,” says Vikas, who is eagerly waiting to know who will be the ‘Queen’ in these remake
After five years of yes and nos, Dostana 2 has finally been shelved. But Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham who were once adjudged Best Jodi will be back on screen soon. However, this film is no bromance clad in gay campiness, if anything its high on male testosterone.
Sanjay Gupta’s Khotey Sikkey revolves around six gangsters and the filmmaker has already cast three of the lead actors. Says a source close to the development, “Sanjay is trying to put the right cast together. He’s managed to lock three actors. Besides John and Abhishek he has also signed Anil Kapoor. He’s in talks with other A-list actors to play the other three gangsters.”
The film will roll post Sanjay Gupta’s ambitious Mumbai-centric action drama, Mumbai Saga which unravels the nexus between the underworld, mill owners and the police. According to the source, Gupta is planning to kickstart Khotey Sikkey in mid 2015 and the film will be shot in two countries.
“The film is in the same genre as Aatish and Kaante. Ever since Kaante, about six men who pull off a heist in the US, opened in 2002, there has been speculation about a sequel. Khote Sikkey can well be described as Kaante 2,” adds the source. But while Kaante borrowed from Reservoir Dogs, The Usual Suspects and Heat, this one is reportedly completely original. “The idea has been with him for the longest time and Sanjay has been developing it for the last couple of years. The time is right for it now.”
